Leavers Dinner

Each year Allan Webb Hall honours those that are leaving res as well as those who have excelled in their various fields. I'm proud to say Canterbury House was awarded for the greatest contribution to the community this year.
Since it is a formal occasion, we couldn't waste the outfits merely on the meal..

Babies of the Department

The Biochemistry, Microbiology and Biotechnology (BMB) Society had it's year end function where a group of 4 students from each year joined together with a single postdoc for a general knowledge quiz. Lara, Claire, Lance and myself teamed uo with our micro lecturer, Dr Knox, and dressed up as the "babies of the department" to add a bit of spice to the evening. Us girls tried to go for the bobby socks look, while Lance adorned himself with a homemade nappy and joining us with the ping tails. The evening involved the general knowledge in the first round (where we got knocked out), a pictionary round, an eating round and lastly a lab prac round where the entire team had to load an electrophoresis gel. Unfortunately we came last along with the Phd team, while it was the honours team that won (winning a trophy and all?!) I guess we look like nerds cause it is only people within our department who would actually think such a night would be fun and even appreciate our humour, but this is the thought that spurred us on in fact!

Meandering through the hills of Grahamstown

The Botany students have to comprise their own herbarium in second year, so Janks and a couple of us friends went up to explore the hills along Mountain Drive to see what we could find for him. Along the way we decided to stop by the abandoned house and see for ourselves the place that has caused so many rumours. I woke up with such sore shoulders the next day because of our exploration. The stairs had been ripped out of the house, though this didn't stop the boys from wanting to get to the top (i.e forth) floor of the house, so we found ledges and holes to climb up and through. I'll be honest and admit that my upper body strength has all but gone now and so I struggled to make it up to the top and required some help. But since my arms were caving in half the time I was dangling in mid air while the poor boys decided what to do with me. Made for a very entertaining afternoon. Unfortunately we still haven't found out what happened to the old tenants of the house, the stories we have heard just fit the ghost house model too well to be believable.
